The Representation of Complex Telic Predicates in Wordnets: the Case of Lexical-Conceptual Structure Deficitary Verbs

چکیده

This paper has a twofold aim: (i) to point out that telicity is both a lexical and a compositional semantic feature; (ii) to propose a straightforward solution to represent lexical telicity in wordnets-like computational lexica. The approach presented here subsumes the basic idea that lexicon is not a repository of idiosyncrasies. It is rather organized following a few general (universal or parametrical) constraints. In this context, despite the fact that the paper is mainly concerned with Portuguese, cross-linguistic generalizations can be captured, on the basis of a contrastive examination of data. The analysis focus on the behavior of complex telic predicates, in particular those which are deficitary with regard to their lexical-conceptual structure. In order to represent appropriately such predicates in wordnets, the specification of information regarding semantic restrictions, within the corresponding synsets, is proposed as well as a telic state relation.

Extending Wordnets To Implicit Information

WordNets mostly deal with lexicalized expressions and lexical-semantic relations among them. Concepts are represented by sets of synonyms (synsets), which constitute the edges of the network. Each synset includes the lexicalized expressions that correspond to a given concept. This paper adduces evidences which support the claim that some concepts, expressed by a subtype of complex telic predica...

Complex Predicates in Indian Language Wordnets

Wordnets, which are repositories of lexical semantic knowledge containing semantically linked synsets and lexically linked words, are indispensable for work on computational linguistics and natural language processing. While building wordnets for Hindi and Marathi, two major IndoEuropean languages, we observed that the verb hierarchy in the Princeton Wordnet was rather shallow. We set to constr...

Hindi Compound Verbs and their Automatic Extraction

We analyse Hindi complex predicates and propose linguistic tests for their detection. This analysis enables us to identify a category of V+V complex predicates called lexical compound verbs (LCpdVs) which need to be stored in the dictionary. Based on the linguistic analysis, a simple automatic method has been devised for extracting LCpdVs from corpora. We achieve an accuracy of around 98% in th...

Lexical-Conceptual Relations as Qualia Role Encoders

In this paper we show how wordnets can be used for building computational lexica that support generative processes accounting for phenomena such as the creation of meaning in context. We propose the integration of qualia information in wordnets through the association of lexical-conceptual relations to qualia roles, in what is a simple and low cost procedure, as it makes use of information alre...

The Effect of Conceptual Metaphor Awareness on Learning Phrasal Verbs by Iranian Intermediate EFL Learners

The ability to comprehend and produce phrasal verbs, as lexical chunks or groups of words which are commonly found together, is an important part of language learning. This study investigates the effect of ‘conceptual metaphor awareness’, as a newly developed technique in Cognitive Linguistics, on learning phrasal verbs by Iranian intermediate EFL learners. To meet this objective, two intact ho...
